Antonio Cromartie

“Dude’s always studying film,” Revis said. “Sometimes, he tells me to look out for this, look out for that, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, how did you see that?’ ” The week before the Jets played New England, Cromartie analyzed every play from his first four games and graded himself on elements like footwork and hand placement, which emerged as a focal point of his off-season training. During the lockout, he often spoke with his college position coach, James Colzie, about using his long arms and hands to disrupt receivers’ timing more at the line of scrimmage. Twice a week, he performed mixed martial exercises — boxing, mostly — that complemented yoga and power-endurance workouts designed by his trainer, Ryan Capretta; sometimes, Cromartie would sprint up a steep slope dubbed Manmaker Hill with a tire strapped to his back and race (and defeat) running backs like Reggie Bush and C. J. Spiller. The former N.F.L. defensive back Solomon Wilcots, who has tracked Cromartie’s development over the last six seasons, said his attention to detail had produced a more well-rounded player.
